Air Brushed R2D2

I love the shape of the R2D2 robot so I set out to produce a laser cut version for a garden ornament but soon realised this was also suited as an indoor sculpture too.

They are cut from 3mm mild steel sheet which has then been powder coated. I have made these in two sizes and, as well as the air brushed versions, have also had both versions small chrome plated - they look out of this world!

R2D2 Boiler

The last thing to be removed, whilst renovating our new home, was a dilapidated old boiler. With all the pipework ending up in my shed, I had an idea to make something from all of this fabulous metal. The shape of the boiler lent itself to the look of one of my most favourite robots of all time - R2D2 from Star Wars. And so I set about stripping the tank of all its insulation and the construction of legs and parts for my homage to Star Wars.

When certain parts are added, a real sense of identity arises within the work. Its characteristics and personality start to guide you towards what it is you need to complete the work. Finding the 1930's GPO headphones which would become the robot's ears was just one thing in a long line of coincidences that make up the magic of creating objects from your imagination. Taps, rivets, guages, polish, varnish and lots of soldering reveals this bespoke steam punk inspired boiler robot.
